Please read the letter below and fill out the form to take action to support equitable transportation access and modernization in Virginia. Please reach out to us at contactus@vaipl.org with any questions.
Climate change, pollution, and traffic congestion are just a few of the problems we are currently facing. These issues significantly impact our health, economy, and environment. The transportation sector in Virginia is responsible for approximately 30% of greenhouse gas emissions. Much of the emissions are from single-owner vehicles.
If we choose public transportation over cars, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve air quality, and help ease traffic congestion. But our cities need a more robust transit system. Many bus stops need amenities like shelters, benches, or trash receptacles. Bus routes are limited by a need for more funding to hire drivers and to purchase more buses to improve frequency.
Public transportation is a moral good and benefits everyone. When community members can access employment, educational opportunities, shopping, and cultural events, it boosts the local economy. Improving public transit is a win for businesses and makes our cities more attractive.
