Petition for Eco-Friendly Practices in Mosques During Ramadan

We, the undersigned members of the Muslim community, urge our mosque to adopt environmentally sustainable practices, particularly during the holy month of Ramadan. We advocate using recyclable or compostable materials instead of plastics and styrofoam in mosque activities and iftars. We believe that this initiative aligns with our Islamic values of stewardship and care for the Earth.

Ramadan is a time of spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and heightened devotion for Muslims worldwide. It is also an opportunity for us to reflect on our relationship with the environment and our responsibility as custodians of the Earth. As stated in the Quran, Allah has entrusted humanity with the stewardship of the Earth:

"Corruption has appeared throughout the land and sea by [reason of] what the hands of people have earned so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness]." — Quran 30:41

This verse reminds us that the Earth has suffered from human exploitation and negligence, and we must rectify this damage through responsible actions.

Plastic and styrofoam pollution pose significant environmental threats, contributing to climate change, harming wildlife, and polluting our oceans and waterways. By using recyclable or compostable materials instead, we can significantly reduce our ecological footprint and contribute to preserving Allah's creation.

Furthermore, embracing eco-friendly practices during Ramadan is in line with the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), who emphasized the importance of conservation and moderation:

"The world is sweet and green, and verily Allah has installed you as vicegerent in it in order to see how you act." — Sunan Abi Dawud 4231

This hadith reminds us of our role as stewards of the Earth and emphasizes the importance of preserving its beauty and resources for future generations.

Therefore, we respectfully request that our mosques take proactive steps to implement eco-friendly practices during Ramadan, including using recyclable or compostable materials for iftars, reducing single-use plastics, and promoting environmental awareness within the community.

By adopting these measures, we fulfill our religious obligation to protect the environment and set an example of responsible citizenship for our community and beyond.

Sincerely,
